E-learning trends on 2019 and years to come: What the future holds?

Since then trends of the provision of education far from university were constantly changing. E-learning (digital training) appeared at the end of 1990’s, when computer education became popular.
Since the 1990’s significant changes have taken place in e-learning trends. Online courses, LMS, CSL and MOOC are trends over the past 10 years and less.
So what kind of e-learning trends to expect over the next 5 years?
1. Microlearning
In 2018 microlearning became very popular. Students choose training modules about the size of a pea to use educational content.
What caused that? Perhaps the report of global consulting company “Deloitte” can explain. The research report entitled “Leading in Learning” says that nowadays student have 1% to focus on education and development during the working week.
And what does it mean in real life? Let’s take a look at this “1%”. For example, if we take an ordinary 5 days, 8 hours work week, today’s employees can spend only 24 minutes on self-development! And how can they achieve their goals in the best way in a short amount of time? They use microlearning.
Typical microlearning experience includes short videos that last 10-12 minites, after that goes online test. Because of its easy content structure, microlearning particularly suitable for “on-the-go learning” or “mobile learning”. These trends will continue to develop over the next few years and it partly looks like courses of Artclever.
2. The A.I. for studying
Using a.i. in e-learning becoming more and more popular each day and it will probably grow in the coming years. This is due to the fact that a.i. eliminates “human factor” and preconceived ideas, which people make to education.
According to “Deloitte”, by 2020 will face the transformative development from digital training to intellectual learning, and that is only one generation! This is why: a.i. can help to personalize educational process better than teachers and counselors. It makes a.i. a good friend for e-learning.
3. Gamification and edutainment
In education, based on GBL, games are used to reach certain results in the process. On the other hand, gamification is a gaming process.
Gamification or edutainment – is not a new phenomenon, but it was widespread due to innovative solutions with practical implementation.
For example, salesforce.com showed that since 2015 their approach to gamification raised clients’ interests.
These days one of the most successful gaming process has been training programs of McDonald’s. The company worked with a leader in gamification and learning based on Kineo to prepare their employees for new cash registers.
Broken co-worker Articulate – one more successful gamification adaptation for workers to teach them the most important values and company politics.
These successes stories guaranteeing that gamification and edutainment will continue and this trend will only increase.
4. AR / VR / MR
AR/VR/MR – is a new set of technologies that are getting started in a corporate sphere and e-learning sphere. AR, VR and MR consider what students experience and how they engage with physical world. And we can use it as e-learning, but we don’t.
One of the reasons, why AR/VR/MR are so forward-looking for e-learning, is an opportunity to integrate the essential information and the content and use them in virtual sphere or global sphere. For example, Walmart had very successful experience in AR/VR/MR learning, 140 000 employees used immersive technologies for studying.
Boeing – is another corporate educator that is using AR/VR/MR to train their workers how to build world-classes airplanes. Result: employees got great experience and reduced learning time by 75%. We can see that this trend is getting a big progress.
5. Video learning
Video learning is an effective way of e-learning by using Facebook or YouTube. And this trend is growing and growing.
5G network, video technologies, smartphones – all these things will make video learning the main e-learning in 2019 and further.
Since video content is much more effective than text notes and presentations online platforms with video learning became popular among everyone.
Anyway, what can function as a catalyst to help video learning become disseminative in 2019 and further? Money and technologies!
According to one of the assessments, in 2017 it takes about 21 345 $ to create 1 hour online content. Almost 12% of the price dropped, it was 18 760 $ in 2018. One of the factors, why it happened, because the cost of video editing had reduced.
